Reasonable Accommodation
A change to a rule or policy that allows a person with a disability to use the housing on equal terms.
A reasonable accommodation under the Fair Housing Act is a change, exception, or adjustment to a rule, policy, practice, or service that may be necessary to allow a person with a disability equal opportunity to use and enjoy a dwelling. Common MHP examples include waiving a pet fee for a service or support animal, allowing a live-in caregiver in addition to lease-listed occupants, or providing a designated accessible parking space. Operators must engage in an interactive process with the resident to identify a workable accommodation, and refusing to do so is itself a Fair Housing Act violation.
